Interview: Adventure Club

For about a year now their has been a bassline storm a-brewing in Montreal, a storm that twists genres from hip hop to hardcore, that overtakes the Hypem top 100 charts, a storm that rages so hard it sucks normally reserved people up on stage and gets them to go absolutely bass-shit crazy. In the eye of this storm are two college students, filth champions, Christian and Leighton combine hardcore sensibilities with perfectly executed dubstep drops to form Adventure Club! Since their start in early 2011 they’ve been churning out remix after remix and we have been devouring and loving each of them. Their sound takes the pseudo-tradition build and drop formula and expands it to the point of stretch marks. They create mystical melodies as seen in “Crave You,” they teach us how to Jerk to the point where our legs collapse, and they took Thrices epic ballad, “Broken Lungs,” and turned it into an entirely new beast. AC was nice enough to take time out of the studio and talk to us about life, hardcore, and their future.
1. After only forming about a year ago your rise to dubstep fame has been meteoric. How did you guys meet/start producing together? How have your lives changed since being on the top of the Hype Machine charts every time you drop a new track?
We met in Highschool, both of us played guitar and wanted to start a band. At the time we we’re heavily influenced by the pop-punk / hardcore scene. We wrote a lot of jams in that genre, up until fall of 2010.
It was summer 2010 actually, that we got introduced to dubstep/brostep/whateverstep that won’t get me flamed.
Evidently it was a couple tracks of the BMTH remix album “Suicide Season Cut Up”
Christian got a bit drunk one night, and tried his hand a dubstep, a few wobbles here and there.
I came over the next day, and was instantly down to switch up the game.
Our lives haven’t really changed to much, we still kind of loaf around play call of duty.
Things have gotten a bit less structured though. We both used to be neurotic health gym rats, that’s pretty much dissipated.  It was like a 360 lifestyle change. We still keep in shape, but it’s not even close to the same.
We use our suitcases as weights now…
We’re only really starting to travel now, so maybe ask us that question in a year, and my answer might be completely different.

2. I read that you guys were originally influenced by hardcore. Being a hardcore fan myself I’m curious, who have you guys been listening to lately and what do you think it is about that genre of music that eventually brought you to dubstep?
I’m big on anything Rise Records and Summerian Records lately. Still love left for Epitaph and Tooth/Nail and whatever is left of Trustkill.
Dream on Dreamer, Of Mice and Men, and new Greeley Estates apparently, they really got their shit together.
It’s definitely that half tempo vibe in breakdowns that do it for us. I can play drums seamlessly between hardcore breakdowns and dubstep drops.  I’m still a huge Glassjaw fan though, listen to ‘em eurrday, and Bring Me the Horizon is a lifesaver at the gym.
We actually just joined the Drop Dead Clothing family. It’s this unreal clothing lined owned by Oli Sykes of BMTH. It’s so cool to be part of it, alongside numerous artists we love.
It’s not all we listen to though, we’re constantly searching for indie gems. There’s just so much music, it’s hard to get it all between producing, touring, school and keeping up with our miss’.
3. You guys have definitely developed your own niche within the dubstep scene and have an army of fans (me included) who just can’t get enough of your remixes. What is it like to be such a relevant part of a genre that is so ever-changing and progressive?

It’s pretty phenomenal really. We can’t quite grasp “why” yet. We’re unable to separate ourselves from our own music, and see why people like it. After we listen to 1923091264172948712 edits, it’s impossible. But we’re truly happy we have and continue to make such dedicated friends that share our music along.
4. For those of us who haven’t seen Adventure Club live, what can be expected from one of your shows? Will you guys be making a trip down to Los Angeles any time soon?
I wish I could remember…
We tend to get pretty crazy, sometimes we’ll drop a lil hardcore, really like throwing some “rap”step in the game.
We really like people onstage with us, granted they’re having a good time, and that one drunk girl isn’t messin’ with our ish.
We’re hitting a deace US TOUR come 2012. So i’m SURE LA will be on the list.

5. Finally, what’s next for Adventure Club? Any new releases? There’s definitely been whispers of a new EP on the way, what can we expect from that?
New EP is taking time, waiting on collaborations. We have a couple new remixes coming out really soon that we’re stoked to get out.  All in good time…
And now to the tracks, enjoy:
Everything To Me (Adventure Club Dubstep Remix) – LIPS
Teach Me How To Jerk (Adventure Club Drumstep Remix) – Audio Push
Crave You (Adventure Club Dubstep Remix) – Flight Facilities
Broken Lungs (Adventure Club Dubstep Remix) – Thrice
